In an effort to combat homelessness among Veterans, the VA has awarded approximately $300 million in grants to private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives. These groups provide services to very low-income Veteran families who have or are at risk of falling into homelessness. Such groups use the money to offer temporary financial assistance for rent and utility payments, security deposits and moving costs. The grants for 2013 are expected to help upwards of 120,000 Veterans.
